Lesley 21st June 2020

My first memories of Tom were around 1978-79 when I was first introduced to The Smith and Pert families at Christmas. I was made to feel very welcome, though it was very daunting to a young shy girl of 20 yrs old ! I remember going to Church on Christmas morning and we left the church before Tom to make our way back to Springfield Road . The Knock on the door was opened by Dick , but I thought it was Tom and expressed my surprise that he made it back from church before us !! Well it was a long time before I lived that one down ! Tom always called me Margaret ( Rogers first wife ) for at least a year , maybe longer , we just laughed it off and eventually he remembered my name was Lesley , not Margaret 😉 We became very close over the years and I had a lovely relationship with my Mum in Law Dot who gave me my love for willow pattern , and to this day still is still my choice of dinner service . When Rog and I married in June 1981 . They did all they could to help make the day a memorable occasion , from Toms prize Delphiniums to Dots recording of the wedding and getting people to record messages to the bride and groom . Of course they were both overjoyed when our first born Chris came along in 1982 and were doting Grandparents . Chris remembers lots of fun days with Nanna Smith , our for walks , cooking and caravan trips . We moved to Bulkely Avenue , Windsor in 1983 and of course they were overjoyed . We enjoyed many meals and card games together also many trips to The Forest Of Dean , Tom and Dots favourite get away place . 1985 saw the birth of our 2nd Born son Adam and he spent lovely times with Nanna and Grandad . I was proud to call them Mum and Dad and when we moved to Kent in 1987 They were there helping us move in and re decorate etc as I was only a few weeks from giving birth to our 3rd son Tom . Then when he was Born Mum and Dad stayed with us after Roger went back to work , making sure I was eating properly, making me drinks and being just lovely 🥰 In 1989 when Mum died , it was such a wrench and so heartbreaking . I will miss her always 😢 Dad was obviously devastated , but with help he found life a little easier , going to cookery classes and then dating . He soon started courting June and in November 1990 they were married . They moved from Springfield Road to St Andrews Avenue and so started the next chapter in Toms life . Fun times with the Cook family , welcoming Grandchildren, Holidays , Cruises and living life to the full . Sadly June passed away in 2018 Tom became infirm but with Roger and David’s love and support as well as live in carers he managed to live out his life in his own home . I will miss you Dad but will always remember all the great times we had together, dances , bbqs , pub lunches , kids parties etc . I will make sure that our first Grandchild , due in July will know all about his / her Smith connections . Sleep tight 💕💕 xxx
