Eve 14th June 2020

So difficult to know where to start as grandad was such an inspirational man that had such a profound impact on my dad (David), uncle Roger, my sister Catherine and all our cousins. There are a huge number of traits and qualities that started with grandad and have filtered down through the generations. Grandad was a serial helper, he helped a huge number of people over his time and many were grateful to him. He had a strong sense of community spirit which was infectious, helping him to recruit friends, colleagues and family to help him in his various projects! He certainly had his fingers in lots of pies and made friends through all his different roles. This was highlighted by the hundred of Christmas cards he used to get every year and the fact that grandad and June would often go on holiday to write all the cards they had to send! Grandad helped to organise many dances and parties at the gardeners hall, fundraising for various initiatives. His sons and grandchildren have definitely also mastered the art of party organising and being hospitable....my dad had a cellar which doubled as a ‘club’ for my 18th birthday and roger has an in house bar, ‘the jolly roger’ which is frequently the focus of lovely parties. Grandad is to thank for all of this too! Grandad loved gardening and nurturing plants, and this is definitely something that his sons, children and great grandchildren have carried on! When grandad first went into hospital my dad, Lorna and Catherine spent a lot of time planting most kinds of vegetables you can imagine in his back garden. Knowing that he was pretty unwell they expected to spend a significant part of the summer in Windsor helping grandad and tending to his garden. My dad and Roger have been so dedicated in helping grandad over recent years, going above and beyond to keep him at home. This was so important to grandad, as someone who had been so able, busy and a serial helper all his life he struggled at times, calling himself a ‘silly old fool’ but the fact that they clearly enjoyed helping, being with and nurturing him him made it all work. Despite never remembering my name (a difficulty he had with most people!) Grandad was always very supportive of me and even given the long distance to Edinburgh, he made it to many of my birthday parties, school shows and university graduations. We had trips away in the caravan, including one where we drove it over a mountain covered in snow in springtime .....pretty scary At the time! I have many great memories of times I spent with grandad and he will be sorely missed! Love Eve Xxx
